Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
